چکیده

We report on X-ray, optical and infrared follow-up observations of GRB980703. We detect a previously unknown X-ray source in the GRB error box; assuming a power law decline we find for its decay index α < –0.91 (3σ). We invoke host galaxy extinction to match the observed spectral slope with the slope expected from ‘fireball’ models. We find no evidence for a spectral break in the infrared to X-ray spectral range on 1998 July 4.4, and determine a lower limit of the cooling break frequency: νc > 1.3 × 10 17 Hz. For this epoch we obtain an extinction of AV = 1.50 ± 0.11. From the X-ray data we estimate the optical extinction to be AV = 20.2 +12.3 −7.3 , inconsistent with the former value. Our optical spectra confirm the redshift of z=0.966 found by Djorgovski et al. (1998). We compare the afterglow of GRB980703 with that of GRB970508 and find that the fraction of the energy in the magnetic field, ǫB < 6× 10 , is much lower in the case of GRB980703, which is a consequence of the high frequency of the cooling break. B, V and R optical photometry performed on the field of the GRB 970111 soon after its detection by BeppoSAX is presented. No remarkable optical object is found inside the corrected error box. The optical counterpart of an X–ray and radio source and a suspected red variable (probably an eclipsing binary) have been detected inside the field of GRB 970111.

Neutrinos may offer a unique opportunity to explore the far Universe at high energy. The ANTARES collaboration aims at building a large undersea neutrino detector able to observe astrophysical sources (AGNs, X-ray binary systems, ...) and to study particle physics topics (neutrino oscillation, ...). After a description of the research opportunities of such a detector, a status report of the exp...

We present the R and V light curves of the optical counterpart of GRB 970228. A critical analysis of all the available data is made in light of the results achieved in the recent GRB Symposium held in Huntsville and by considering the latest information from the HST images on the underlying nebulosity.

Recent observations show that the temporal decay of the R-band afterglow from GRB 990123 steepened about 2.5 days after the burst. We here propose a possible explanation for such a steepening: a shock expanding in a dense medium has undergone the transition from a relativistic phase to a nonrelativistic phase. We find that this model is consistent with the observations if the medium density is ...
